Who we are
This website, proudofus.co.uk, is run by Proud Of Us Ltd. We are the "data controller" for the personal information described here, which means we decide how it is used and we are responsible for looking after it.
You can reach us about anything on this page at Iam@proudofus.co.uk.
What we collect
You can read every story, watch every film and use every lesson without telling us anything about yourself. We only collect personal information when you choose to give it to us.
We do not use advertising trackers, we do not run analytics that follow you around the web and we never sell your information.
Why we use it, and on what basis
UK data protection law asks us to say which lawful basis we rely on for each use.
- Mailing list, book updates and the Tithing waiting list: your consent. We only email you because you asked us to. Every email has a way to unsubscribe, or you can just reply and ask.
- Story contributions: our legitimate interests. We use what you send to check it against the record, publish it if it passes and credit you only if you said yes. We may email you about your contribution.
- Memberships, donations and orders: to carry out what you asked for. We need your details to take your payment, run your membership or send your order.
- Payment and tax records: a legal obligation. UK law requires us to keep financial records.
- Technical logs: our legitimate interests in keeping the site working, secure and free from abuse.
Who helps us
We use a small number of trusted services to run the site. They only handle your information to provide their service to us.
- Netlify hosts the website and stores the forms you fill in (mailing list, book updates, the Tithing waiting list and story contributions).
- Stripe takes membership and donation payments.
- Our shop provider and print partner take shop orders, then make and post them to you.
- YouTube plays our films on story and lesson pages. We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, so it does not set cookies until you press play.
- Google Fonts and Cloudflare deliver the site's fonts and some page code. Like any web request, they see your IP address.
Some of these companies are based in, or store data in, the United States. Where your information leaves the UK, it is protected by the safeguards UK law requires, such as the UK–US data bridge or approved contract terms.
How long we keep it
- Mailing list, book updates and the Tithing waiting list: until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you.
- Story contributions: for as long as we need to check and publish them. If we publish your contribution with your name, it stays on the site until you ask us to take your name or the contribution down.
- Payments and orders: six years, because UK tax law requires it.
- Emails you send us: for as long as we need them to help you, then deleted.
- Technical logs: kept by our host for a short period, then deleted.
Cookies and your browser
We do not use advertising or tracking cookies. A few features save small notes in your own browser, which never come to us:
- your progress in the games and the Daily 10, and the cards you have collected;
- the lessons you have ticked off on the teaching pages;
- whether you closed the announcement banner at the top of the homepage.
You can clear these at any time by clearing your browser's site data. Payment pages run by Stripe and our shop provider may set cookies they need to take payments safely.
Your rights
You can ask us, free of charge, to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you and send you a copy;
- correct anything that is wrong;
- delete your information;
- stop using your information, or stop emailing you;
- send your information to you or someone else in a common format.
Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. We will answer within one month.
Contact and complaints
Email Iam@proudofus.co.uk with any question or request about your data. If you are not happy with how we have handled it, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We would always like the chance to put things right first.
If we change this policy, we will update it here and change the date at the top.
